Coffee has been part of cultures around the world for centuries, but not every drink on today’s menus boasts such a long history. Take the flat white, for example: a modern classic that only started making waves in the mid-1980s. Both Australia and New Zealand claim the credit for inventing it, and debate still rages over who truly poured the first.
Fast-forward to today, and the flat white has cemented itself as one of the most frequently ordered drinks on the coffee scene. But what exactly is it?

So… What Is a Flat White?
Back in 2018, McDonald’s ran a cheeky advert poking fun at how complicated flat white definitions could be, eventually simplifying it as “a stronger latte, just with less milk.” And while that’s not entirely wrong, there’s a bit more to it.
A flat white is essentially an espresso-based drink, made with silky-smooth microfoam – a velvety, finely textured milk that blends seamlessly with the coffee. It’s smaller than a latte, stronger in flavour, and often served in a 5–6 oz cup. You could call it the lovechild of an espresso and a latte – smooth, creamy, and just bold enough to satisfy serious coffee fans.

Why Haven’t We Always Seen It in the UK?
If the flat white’s been around since the 80s, why did many of us only hear about it recently? Here’s a bit of coffee history:
When Australians and New Zealanders holidayed in the UK, they were often surprised at the absence of their beloved flat white on coffee shop menus.
That changed in 2005 when Aussie Peter Hall and New Zealanders James Gurnsey and Cameron McClure opened Flat White Soho, a café in London dedicated to showcasing the drink. By 2009, they were selling around 700 flat whites a day – and larger coffee chains started taking notice. From there, the flat white spread rapidly through the UK, becoming a favourite for coffee lovers wanting something a bit different.

Why Are Flat Whites So Popular?
A few reasons:
✔ Bolder Flavour – Less milk means espresso’s natural sweetness and complexity shine through.
✔ Velvety Texture – The fine microfoam gives a creamy yet lightweight mouthfeel that’s completely different from frothy cappuccinos.
✔ Smaller Size – It’s more concentrated than a latte and appeals to those who prefer a shorter, punchier coffee experience.
✔ Health Appeal – For the calorie-conscious, a flat white’s smaller milk content can be a bonus.
And let’s be honest – it just feels cool to order one. The flat white arrived during a boom in coffee culture, when people were more curious than ever about new ways to enjoy their brew.
